i am on this site because someone blogged about how hilariously true this “emo song” is.

unfortunately “emo” is a term that has been misused for years that was coined originally in reference to certain types of bands (no, not the fall out boy shit on the radio now.) but genuine, artistic, un-glamorous, non-mass-marketed bands like hum, low, mineral, the promise ring, sunny day real estate.

now “emo” stands for an entire subculture, many (not all) of which definitely involve themselves in many things on this list. emo used to stand for a type/types of music – although not pinned to a single genre. it did NOT stand for a set of people with long hair, chuck taylors, and girl jeans.

i don’t hate people that call themselves “emo” or choose to be “emo”, however I do believe that many people that call themselves such do not even know about the roots of what “emo” actually stands for, and are just following all the other kids because it is “cool” and it makes them feel like they belong.

many people diss “emo poetry” and “emo lyrics”. if you are wondering why, it is because no matter WHAT type of poetry/lyrics is being talked about, there is bad and good.

once something becomes super-cliche, it becomes really cheesy and you risk the stereotyping of that thing. such as songs that talk about “i cut my wrists” or “black dark ravens in the cold of winter night blah blah blah”. be emo, thats fine, but please be original, please take who you are and what you do and make it only a PART of yourself, don’t just blindly become “emo”.

there are so many cookie-cutter, stereotypical emos, that you are making it hard for others to see that many of you are indeed individuals with differing opinions and tastes. if you don’t want to be stereotyped, stop being the stereotype.
